Training
We understand training to be a lifelong mission.  We are constantly striving to improve our education and techniques to provide better, safer services to our neighbors.  Our employees have extensive training in EMS and are certified at all levels, from Medical First Responder to Critical Care Paramedic.  We strive to assure that all firefighters are trained to firefighter 1 and 2 standards as a baseline and work to improve from there.

As new firefighters join the department they are ushered through an extensive training academy called FIT (firefighters in training). Basic skills, as well as or Department's core beliefs and vision, are taught during the FIT program.

Upon graduation from the FIT program, firefighters are assigned to a shift and a captain.  This is when the real education begins.  These dedicated individuals will spend thousands and thousands of hours over a career learning and sharpening their skill sets.

We also try to avail our staff to education and training opportunities outside our agency.  Our staff includes firefighters that have specialty training in other areas such as Rescue Technician, Hazardous Materials Technician and many more.

Shifts

AFD career personnel staff the station with one Captain and three firefighters working a 24-hour duty cycle and 48 hours off.

The volunteers respond when available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as well as required station time each week.
