Wastewater Department
Wastewater DepartmentResponsibilities
Andover’s Wastewater Department is responsible for treating over 260,000,000 gallons of raw sewage annually. This fact, combined with approximately 150 new sewer hookups each year, keeps our Wastewater Department busy year round.

In addition to the regular duties included with treatment of Andover’s wastewater, the Wastewater Department cleans one-third of city's sewer lines each year. As part of an ongoing maintenance program, Contractors line approximately 4,500 feet of sewer lines, and rehab 20 manholes in an effort to prevent groundwater from entering the sewer system, resulting in treatment of the groundwater. The rehabilitation of the sewer lines and manholes has allowed the average daily flows to remain steady, while the number of sewer connections continues to increase. The wastewater department has also been involved with the Global Positioning System mapping of the City’s sewer system.

Energy Efficiency Report
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and Wichita State University (WSU) conducted an Energy Efficiency Assessment of Andover's Wastewater Plant in the first quarter of 2014. The results of that report were very encouraging, with minimal recommendations for improvement. The Wastewater Department will look into what can be done to reduce energy usage without hurting the process in the coming months. Future Plans

Future plans for the Wastewater Department include the continued rehabilitation of the City’s existing sewer system, as well as the planning and implementation involved with the expansion of collection and treatment facilities in the near future. The Wastewater Department operates the Andover Compost Site, which accepts lawn clippings and leaves. Limited amounts of compost are also available free of charge to the public.
