Captain Tracy Buchanan began his career in law enforcement as an Andover Police Department Reserve Officer in 1994 and a few months later was hired by the Wichita (KS) police department. In 1997 Buck, as he is commonly known, returned to the Andover Police Department as a reserve Sergeant where he remained for 7-years. In 2004 Officer Buchanan was hired on as a full-time officer, and in 2005 moved to a Part-Time Officer position where he served until 2009. In August of 2009, Officer Buchanan returned to full-time status and assigned to the Patrol Division as a School Resource Officer. On April 1st, 2013, Buck was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and in August of 2013 reclassified to the rank of Lieutenant. On December 31st, 2017 Buck was promoted to Captain and served as the Special Services Commander until February of 2020. Currently Captain Buchanan serves as the “Operations Commander” where he oversees the day-to-day operations of both the Patrol and Investigations sections. Captain Buchanan’s additional duties include the Department’s Use of Force Report Manager, Police Vehicle Pursuit Manager, Early Warning System Administrator, Victim/Witness Assistance Administrator,Juvenile Enforcement & Prevention Manager, Extra Duty Employment Coordinator, Defense Tactics Instructor, ASP Instructor, OC/Pepper Spray Instructor, Child Passenger Safety Seat Technician, serves on the Department’s Accident Review Committee, Training Committee and chairperson of the Awards Committee.
Capt. Buchanan is a 2013 graduate of the Kansas University Public Management Center’s “Command School,” a 2016 graduate of the Kansas Police Administrators Seminar (KPAS) and a 2017 graduate of the 270th Session of the FBI’s National Academy.
Captain Buchanan was the recipient of the 2010 “Officer of the Year” award.
