1. Does the Environmental Officer respond to every complaint?

The Environmental Officer will respond to every complaint and will issue notifications and/or violations as warranted.

2. Why is it taking so long for my complaint to be addressed?

The Environmental Officer must follow due legal process as directed by national, state and local ordinances. Due process can be tedious and time consuming. The violator or defendant has specific rights and must be allowed a certain amount of time to resolve a violation. In some cases, making contact with a property owner or tenant is also difficult. These and other issues cause compliance, at times, to be a lengthy process.

3. How can the City tell me what I can do with my property that I personally own?

State and local ordinances have been enacted for all types of health, life and safety issues. Many of these laws and ordinances often do not, on the surface, make sense to the general public. If you ever have a question regarding the reasoning and/or justification of a specific code, feel free to contact City Hall.

4. If I am contacted by the Environmental Officer regarding a violation, can I know who complained about my property.

The Environmental Officer will not give out complainant information to anyone.

5. Can the Environmental Officer give a citizen another property owner’s name and/or provide assistance with contacting that property owner?

The Environmental Officer is not allowed to give out any type of property owner information based on the possible perception of a conflict of interest. Property owner information can be obtained through the County Register of Deeds office.
